canfield 60/40 and 50/50 solder for stained glass
Assembly of stained glass can be various from case to case, depending on what type of frameing you're using. In most cases, between two pieces of stained glass, there will be a metal frame to hold the two pieces (example, lead frame), thus a soldere will be needed for soldering the metals for joining the framing and hold the stained glass.
What alloy of solder for stained glass soldering?
We produce same type of solder like canfield, and we can make same canfield 60/40 and 50/50 solder, these two types of alloys are the most widely used solder alloy for stained glass. Canfield 60/40 solder and canfield 50/50 solder are made with high purity tin and lead being casted under high temperature, form into either bar solder or wire solder, with good wetting property and good soldering bond strength, and cost wise is quite affrodable.
What is the difference between canfield 60/40 solder and canfield 50/50 solder for stained glass?
Performance. Talking about the final soldering effect after the assembly of stained glass, visually there's no obvious difference from these two types of solder. And both alloys has good mechanical property to hold the stained glass, quality wise both are good.
Working temperature. Canfield 60/40 solder contains more tin and less lead when comparing to canfield 50/50, such composition determines that the melting point of canfield 60/40 solder is lower comparing to canfield 50/50 solder. A lower melting point means less heat to work with, that makes soldering faster and easier. If considering in this aspect, 60/40 solder has more credits.
Cost wise. Canfield 60/40 solder is more expensive comparing to canfield 50/50, because 60/40 contains more tin which is an expensive metal. Regarding this aspect, canfield 50/50 for stained glass assembly has more credits.
